Are you a local MSU student who has been charged with a MIP and are now left wondering what consequences this may have for future employment? We get this question frequently. The answer varies.
For your first offense, the court may defer proceedings and require the individual pay a fine of not more than $100, perform community service, participate in substance abuse screening and treatment. If the individual successfully completes their sentence and pays any required fines, then the court may dismiss the case without a conviction. Thus, there should be no impact to your future employment but a record would be available to the department of corrections, prosecutor’s office or a law enforcement agency upon your application for employment.
For a second offense, the penalty may include a fine of no more than $200, attendance at a rehabilitation program and/or no more than 30 days in jail.
For a third offense , the penalty may include a fine of no more than $500, attendance at a rehabilitation program and/or no more than 60 days in jail.
